Why three
Three is an awkward-looking number that solves a real problem: it fits along a wall or in a bay where a four-drum unit would not, while holding more than the common two-drum size. Operations usually arrive at it by measuring the space rather than by choosing it first.
The removable grid is the maintenance feature
A bund only works if the sump underneath is empty. In practice sumps collect rainwater, condensate, dust and minor drips, and a sump half full of water has lost half its containment capacity before any incident.
A removable grid means the sump can actually be inspected and cleaned. A fixed grid means it usually is not — which is how bunds quietly stop being compliant.
