What are the standard plastic pallet sizes in the UK?
British operations run a narrower range of sizes than people expect. In practice almost everything moves on one of six footprints, and the rest are specials.
The international reference is ISO 6780, which sets out the principal dimensions and tolerances for flat pallets used in intercontinental handling. It recognises six footprints, of which two dominate European trade: 1200 × 1000 mm and 1200 × 800 mm.

What is the difference between a UK standard pallet and a Euro pallet?
Two hundred millimetres, and a great deal of downstream consequence.
A UK standard pallet is 1200 × 1000 mm. A Euro pallet is 1200 × 800 mm. Both are 1200 mm on the long side, so they behave the same way down the length of a trailer. The difference is the width, and that is what decides how many fit across a vehicle, how they sit in racking, and whether your customer’s goods-in team accepts them without a conversation.
The practical rule: ship to UK customers on 1200 × 1000, and to European customers on 1200 × 800, unless you have been told otherwise. Running one size across both markets saves you money on pallets and costs you money on freight utilisation, which is almost always the worse trade.
If you are exporting, there is a separate advantage that has nothing to do with size. Solid wood packaging leaving or entering Great Britain must be debarked, heat treated to 56°C for at least 30 continuous minutes and marked under ISPM 15. Those rules apply to solid timber and explicitly not to processed materials, so plastic pallets fall outside them entirely. Non-compliant wood packaging can be rejected or destroyed at the border; a plastic pallet cannot fail that particular test. See our detailed comparison of Euro, UK and ISO footprints.

How do you match a pallet size to your racking?
This is where most size decisions actually get made, and where most mistakes get made too.
Beam-and-upright racking is built for a specific pallet footprint. The pallet sits across two beams with its runners spanning the gap, and the load rating assumes it does. Put the wrong footprint in and you either lose the overhang you need, or the runners sit in the wrong plane and the rated load no longer applies. Storage racking design, load notices and inspection are covered by SEMA guidance, and any change of pallet footprint is a change your racking inspector will want to know about.
Three questions settle it:
- Which way does the pallet enter the bay? A 1200 × 1000 loaded 1000 mm-first behaves completely differently from the same pallet loaded 1200 mm-first.
- Is the pallet rated for racking at all? Static, dynamic and racking loads are three different numbers, and racking is always the lowest. A nestable pallet rated for floor stacking is not a racking pallet, whatever it costs.
- Does the load overhang? Overhang moves the effective load off the runners. If your boxes hang over the deck edge, tell us — it changes the specification.

Which size makes best use of a container or trailer?
Freight is usually the biggest cost in the chain, so the pallet that fills the box wins.
A standard 40 ft container has roughly 12.03 m of internal length and about 2.35 m of internal width. That width is the constraint. Two 1200 × 1000 pallets side by side across the width use 2000 mm of the 2350 mm available; two Euro pallets at 800 mm each use 1600 mm, which is why Euro pallets are often loaded in a mixed or pinwheeled pattern rather than straight rows.
We have deliberately not put a single pallet count here, because the honest answer depends on the actual container, the loaded height, whether the load can be pinwheeled and whether you can double-stack. One thing size does not change: a lighter pallet means more of your chargeable weight is product. On air freight in particular that difference is money on every consignment, which is why exporters around Heathrow and West London tend to run lightweight footprints.
When is a custom pallet size worth paying for?
Less often than people think, and the reason is tooling and resale.
A bespoke footprint means your pallets fit nothing else. They will not stack with a customer’s stock, they will not go into a pooled system, and if you change process you cannot redeploy them. A standard size you can buy again in three years is worth a surprising amount.
A custom size genuinely earns its place when the load itself is fixed and awkward — a moulding, a machine base, a tank, a component that will never change dimensions — or when a bespoke footprint removes a whole handling step. Standardising in the other direction is more often the win. Operations running four sizes across three sites usually find that two sizes cover everything, and the saving shows up in storage, in handling errors and in the price per pallet. What is the standard pallet size in the UK?
1200 × 1000 mm. It is the footprint most UK distribution, grocery and industrial traffic runs on, and it is the size to choose unless you have a specific reason not to. The Euro footprint of 1200 × 800 mm is the other size in common use, mainly for goods moving into Europe.
Is a Euro pallet the same as a standard pallet?
No. A Euro pallet is 1200 × 800 mm; a UK standard pallet is 1200 × 1000 mm. They share the 1200 mm long side but differ by 200 mm in width, which changes how many fit across a vehicle and how they sit in racking. They are not interchangeable in an automated system.

Do plastic pallets come in the same sizes as wooden ones?
Yes, the common footprints match, which is what makes switching straightforward. What differs is dimensional consistency over time: timber swells, warps and loses boards, while an injection-moulded pallet holds its dimensions across thousands of cycles. That matters most in automated warehouses, where a pallet a few millimetres out of tolerance gets rejected by the conveyor.
Can I mix pallet sizes in one warehouse?
You can, and plenty of operations do, but it costs more than it looks. Mixed sizes mean mixed racking configurations, more handling errors, more stock of empties and a worse price per pallet. If you are running more than two footprints, it is worth asking whether two would cover everything.
How do I measure a pallet correctly?
Length first, then width, both in millimetres, measured across the top deck at its widest point. State which dimension is the entry side — that is, which way the forks go in — because 1200 × 1000 and 1000 × 1200 describe the same pallet loaded two different ways, and in racking that distinction decides the load rating.
