Why do exporters near Heathrow choose plastic over timber?
Two reasons, and they are both financial rather than sentimental.
The first is regulatory friction. GOV.UK guidance places ISPM 15 obligations on solid wood packaging material: packing cases, boxes, crates, drums, pallets, box pallets, pallet collars and dunnage. Plastic is not solid wood packaging, so the heat-treatment and marking regime does not apply to it. For a forwarder handling mixed destinations, that removes a category of paperwork, a category of inspection risk, and the possibility of a consignment being held because a stamp is illegible.
The second is chargeable weight. IATA’s guidance sets the volumetric calculation at cubic centimetres divided by 6,000, and the carrier bills whichever is greater, volumetric or actual. On a dense consignment charged by actual weight, the pallet tare is freight you are paying to put on an aircraft. A lighter export deck under the same load is a direct saving repeated on every shipment.

Which pallets suit air freight and one-trip export?
Lightweight and nestable decks carry most one-trip export work. Where the pallet is going into an international returnable loop, or the load is dense enough to need racking at the far end, a medium-weight or heavy-duty deck is the better answer. Ratings come from the model’s own test data under ISO 8611-1:2025, which defines nominal load, maximum working load and durability comparison testing for flat pallets.
