Plastic pallet load capacity: static, dynamic and racking loads explained

Every plastic pallet carries three different figures. Static load is what it holds standing on a flat floor, dynamic load what it holds while a forklift moves it, and racking load what it holds unsupported across two beams. Racking is always the lowest, and it is usually the one that matters.

    What do static, dynamic and racking load actually mean?

    They describe the same pallet in three situations, and the numbers are not interchangeable. Quoting a static figure to justify a racking application is the most common specification error we see.

    The difference between them comes down to one thing: how much of the pallet is supported from underneath. Sitting on a solid floor, the whole underside carries the load. On forks, two strips carry it. In racking, only the two edges resting on the beams carry it, and the middle of the pallet has to bridge the gap on its own.

    Why is the racking figure always the lowest?

    Two reasons: geometry and time.

    The geometry is straightforward. In an open beam bay the pallet is a bridge, held at two edges, carrying everything in the middle with nothing beneath it. Deflection across the centre of the deck is what a racking rating is really controlling.

    Time is the part people miss. A dynamic load lasts thirty seconds; a racked load can sit there for six months. Polymers deflect progressively under sustained load — creep — so a pallet that looks perfectly flat on day one can sag noticeably by the end of a long dwell. A responsible racking rating is a figure the pallet can hold for a long time, not a figure it survives on the day.

    That is also why support bars change the picture. Steel reinforcement in the runners, or beam-mounted deck supports that carry the pallet across its width rather than at two edges, materially changes what a bay will take. If you are close to the limit, that is usually cheaper than changing pallet.

    Racking design, load notices and inspection are covered by SEMA guidance, and the pallet rating is only half the answer — the beam and the bay have their own, and the lower figure governs.

    What changes a pallet’s effective capacity?

    More than the datasheet suggests. Every published figure assumes a set of conditions, and real warehouses break most of them.

    Overhang. If the load hangs over the deck edge, the weight beyond the edge is carried as a cantilever and the effective load moves outwards, away from the runners that are meant to carry it. Even 50 mm of overhang on all four sides changes the sum. If your boxes overhang, say so when you ask for a rating.

    Entry direction. A rating assumes the forks go in on a specific side. A 1200 × 1000 pallet entered on the 1000 mm side is a different structure from the same pallet entered on the 1200 mm side, because the runners span differently. Same pallet, two answers.

    Point loads. A drum, a machine base or a steel foot concentrates weight into a few square centimetres of deck. Ratings assume a distributed load spread across the deck surface, and a point load can fail a deck well under the published figure.

    Temperature. Polymers stiffen and lose impact resistance as they get colder, and soften as they get hotter. A pallet used at −25°C in a blast freezer, or one standing in a hot store or a shrink tunnel, is not working under the conditions the number assumed.     Age and damage. A pallet that has been dropped, hit by forks, or run for years in a busy loop is not carrying its day-one figure. Inspect and retire on condition, exactly as you would with racking.

    Why can you not read across from a wooden pallet’s rating?

    Because the two materials fail in completely different ways, and the failure modes are what the ratings are protecting against.

    Timber is strong in the short term and unpredictable in the long term. A wooden pallet holds a heavy load well on day one, then loses a bottom board, splits along a nail line or absorbs moisture and drops in strength with no visible warning. Its capacity varies batch to batch and with whatever repairs it has picked up.

    A moulded plastic pallet behaves the opposite way. It is consistent from unit to unit and across its life, but its stiffness is temperature-dependent and it creeps under sustained load. It bends before it breaks, which is a genuine safety advantage, but it means the racking figure is set by acceptable deflection rather than by the point of collapse.

    So a like-for-like swap on a headline kilogramme figure is not a valid comparison. What you should compare is the whole application: the load, the dwell time, the temperature, the entry direction and the racking. That is a specification exercise, not a number-matching exercise, and it takes about ten minutes on the phone.

    How do you get the right figure for your application?

    You ask, and you ask with the load in front of you.

    We do not publish blanket capacity figures on this page, because a number without its conditions is worse than no number at all. The static, dynamic and racking ratings for a specific pallet come from us on request, quoted against your actual load — the real weight, the real footprint, the real entry direction and the real storage method. That way the figure you get is one you can rely on.

    In practice most conversations land in one of three places. Floor storage and light distribution work on a lighter pallet. Loaded stacking or heavier distribution wants a stackable pallet with a closed or reinforced deck. Open beam racking wants a purpose-built heavy-duty rackable pallet with runners or a perimeter base, and sometimes steel reinforcement as well.

    Buying too far down that scale is expensive twice: once when the pallets fail early, and again when a racked load deflects and your inspector fails the bay. Buying too far up it is money left on the floor.     How much weight can a plastic pallet hold?

    It depends on the pallet and the situation, which is why any single figure is misleading. The same pallet has one capacity on a floor, a lower one on forks and lower again in racking. Send us the load weight, the footprint and the storage method and we will give you the rated figures.

    What is the difference between static and dynamic load?

    Static load is the weight a pallet holds standing still on a flat floor, with its whole underside supported. Dynamic load is the weight it holds while being lifted and moved, supported only on the fork channels. Dynamic is always the lower of the two, because far less of the pallet is carrying the weight.

    Why is the racking capacity so much lower?

    In an open beam bay the pallet spans between two beams with nothing under the middle, so it works as a bridge. It also holds that load for months rather than seconds, and polymers deflect progressively under sustained load. The racking figure controls that deflection.

    Does load capacity change in a freezer?

    Yes. Polymers stiffen and lose impact resistance as temperature falls, and behave differently again in a hot store. Specify for the coldest and hottest points your pallet will actually see, not the average, and tell us if the pallet is loaded warm and then blast frozen.

    Does it matter which way the forks go in?

    It matters a great deal. A load rating assumes a specific entry direction, because the runners span differently depending on which side you enter. A 1200 × 1000 pallet entered on the 1000 mm side is structurally a different pallet from the same one entered on the 1200 mm side.

    Can I use my wooden pallet’s rating as a guide?

    No. Timber and moulded plastic fail in different ways: timber loses boards and strength unpredictably as it ages, while plastic is consistent but temperature-sensitive and deflects under sustained load. Compare the application — load, dwell time, temperature, entry direction and racking — rather than two headline numbers.
