How many pallets fit in a 40ft container?

There is no single correct number. A 40 ft container gives roughly 12.03 m of internal length and 2.35 m of width, which works out at around 20 floor positions for either 1200 × 1000 or 1200 × 800 pallets, and up to double that where the load can safely be double-stacked.

    What are the internal dimensions of a shipping container?

    Start here, because every pallet count comes from these numbers and every one of them is approximate. Internal dimensions vary between builders, ages of box and shipping lines, and a repaired container differs again. Measure the actual box before you commit to a loading plan.

    As a working guide:

    • 20 ft — about 5.90 m long, 2.35 m wide, 2.39 m high internally.
    • 40 ft standard — about 12.03 m long, 2.35 m wide, 2.39 m high internally.
    • 40 ft high cube — the same footprint, about 2.69 m high internally.

    One detail that catches people out on the loading bay: the door aperture is narrower and lower than the internal dimensions. The corner posts and the door frame eat into the opening, so a load that fits the inside of the box can still refuse to go through the doors. If you are loading close to the width, check the door opening rather than the internal width.

    How do you work out how many pallets fit?

    The arithmetic is simple. Divide the internal width by the pallet side you are putting across the box, divide the internal length by the other side, and multiply.

    Take a 1200 × 1000 pallet in a 40 ft box. Two 1000 mm sides across the width use 2000 mm of the 2350 mm available, so you get two across. Along the length, 12,030 mm divided by 1200 mm gives ten rows. Two by ten is 20 floor positions, with about 30 mm to spare down the length.

    Now the same box with Euro pallets. Two 800 mm sides use 1600 mm of the width. You cannot get a third across, because 2400 mm exceeds the 2350 mm available. Ten rows again, so 20 floor positions — the same count, with 750 mm of dead width you are still paying to freight. That surprises people, and it is why the UK 1200 × 1000 footprint often beats Euro for deep-sea export.

    The high cube does not change the floor plan at all. It buys you 300 mm of extra headroom, which only helps if you are stacking.

    Why is the real number usually lower than the arithmetic?

    Because the arithmetic assumes a perfect world, and a container is not one. Five things move it.

    The actual box. Internal dimensions differ by builder and by age. Thirty millimetres of spare length in the calculation is not spare length in reality.

    Overhang. Boxes rarely stop neatly at the deck edge, and a 20 mm overhang each side turns a 2000 mm row into a 2040 mm row.

    Loaded height. Irrelevant until you try to stack, and then the only thing that matters.

    Weight. Dense product hits the payload limit long before the floor runs out. Confirm the plated gross weight for the specific box with your line.

    The doors. The aperture is narrower and lower than the interior.

    Pinwheeling — turning alternate pallets ninety degrees to use the leftover width or the tail of the box — can recover a position or two, particularly in a 20 ft. It also makes the load harder to secure and harder to unload in sequence, so it is a trade rather than a free gain.

    What every pallet count in this article assumes

    • Internal dimensions are approximate; measure the actual container.
    • Pallets are loaded square, in straight rows, with no overhang.
    • The floor is level and fully usable end to end.
    • Payload and plated gross weight limits have been checked separately.
    • The load can pass the door aperture, which is narrower than the box.

    When can you double-stack a container load?

    Double-stacking is where the real gain sits, and where the real risk sits too.

    The height check is straightforward. A standard 40 ft gives about 2.39 m of internal height, so two tiers means each loaded pallet needs to come in under roughly 1.19 m including the pallet itself. A high cube gives about 2.69 m, so each tier can run to about 1.34 m. Measure your loaded pallet as it actually stands, not as the packing spec says it should.

    The load check is the one people skip. The bottom pallet has to carry the full weight of the pallet above it, in transit, with a ship rolling. That is a dynamic and stacking load question, not a static one, and it depends on whether the upper load bears evenly across the deck or presses down through a few point loads.     If the product itself cannot take weight on top — sacks, drums, anything soft-sided — the answer is usually a pallet box or a stacking frame instead. A rigid plastic pallet box carries the tier above through its own walls rather than through the product, which is what makes a second tier possible on loads that would otherwise crush.

    Does the pallet itself change the number?

    Not the floor count, usually. It changes almost everything else.

    Tare weight. Every kilo of pallet is a kilo of payload you do not fill with product. Across 20 or 40 positions that adds up quickly, and on weight-limited product it directly reduces what you can ship. A lighter moulded pallet gives that capacity back.

    Dimensional consistency. Timber swells, warps and loses boards, and a pallet 15 mm over nominal is 30 mm over across a two-wide row. Moulded pallets hold their dimensions, so you plan to 2000 mm and get 2000 mm.

    Border risk. Solid wood packaging in international trade must be debarked, heat treated to 56°C for at least 30 continuous minutes and marked under ISPM 15, and non-compliant timber can be refused entry or destroyed at the border. The standard explicitly excludes processed non-solid materials, so plastic pallets sit outside it.     If you are shipping one-way and the pallet is not coming back, tell us. There is a real difference between a pallet built for two hundred round trips and one built to make a single sea crossing intact, and it shows up in the price. The heavy-duty range covers both.

    Less than the floor space suggests, on dense product. Each container has a plated maximum gross weight, and the payload is that figure less the tare of the box. Confirm it for the specific container with your line, and remember the pallet’s own weight counts against it.
